Background: February, 2017, marks the 29th anniversary of the beginning of a peaceful movement asserting the right to self-determination of the people of Nagorno Karabakh. It also marks the 29th anniversary of the Azerbaijani government's brutal response to Artsakh's quest for justice and freedom, beginning with the bloody pogroms against the Armenian population in Sumgait that left hundreds dead and wounded.
Similar attacks took place over the next two years in Kirovabad, Maragha and eventually Baku in January of 1990, forcing the centuries old Armenian population in Azerbaijan to find safe haven in Armenia and countries around the world. Today, Azerbaijan continues to reject peace offers and is escalating its efforts to resolve this conflict through force.
