California’s pension funds for public school teachers, employees and retirees (CalPERS and CalSTRS) have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in Turkish government bonds. Assemblymember Nazarian’s bill AB 1597 calls upon the pension funds to cease investing in the Turkish government when sanctions are imposed by the U.S. federal government regarding Turkey’s ongoing denial of the Armenian Genocide.
Divestment from Turkish bonds over Turkey’s denial of the Armenian Genocide, the continued funding of a campaign of genocide denial, and the recent erosion of democratic principles would send a clear message that California, the 5th largest economy in the world, demands justice and recognition for 1.5 million Armenians killed.
The bill was just passed by the CA State Senate and Assembly. Act today by sending an email to California Governor Jerry Brown, asking him to sign AB 1597 into law before the September 30 deadline.
